What a hospital stay costs a visitor

Visitors aren’t covered by provincial health plans. Pick a hospital schedule and the days in hospital to see what it bills patients from outside Canada.

Rates: Emergency visit $1,242 · Ward, per day $4,005 · Intensive care, per day $15,642 (from April 1, 2026). Queensway Carleton Hospital: fees without health insurance Non-residents of Canada pay three times the uninsured-resident rate. Ontario hospitals set their own non-resident rates.

Questions people ask

Is this what super visa insurance costs?

No. This is the bill insurance protects against. Premiums are set by each insurer, mostly by age, deductible and health history; a licensed broker quotes them. We don’t publish premiums.

Do these rates include doctors’ fees?

No. Hospital rates cover the hospital’s own charges (the bed, nursing, most tests and drugs during the stay). Physicians mostly bill separately, as do ambulances and medical repatriation, which is one reason IRCC requires $100,000 of coverage.

Why isn’t Alberta here?

Alberta Health Services doesn’t publish a hospital rate schedule for patients from outside Canada that we could find. In Ontario each hospital sets its own non-resident rates, so we show two hospitals’ published schedules. We add a province when its rates are published.

Are super visa holders covered by OHIP or MSP?

No. Provincial health plans cover residents of the province. Parents and grandparents visiting on a super visa are visitors, which is why IRCC requires private insurance for the whole stay.
