Answer six questions from the policy or quote in front of you. Each answer is checked against IRCC’s published rule, with the source.

## IRCC's insurance rules (checked 2026-10-26)

- From a Canadian insurance company, or a foreign insurer that OSFI has authorized for accident and sickness insurance, that is on OSFI’s list, and that issued the policy in the course of its insurance business in Canada. Brokers and claims administrators are not insurers. ([IRCC notice: foreign insurers accepted (Jan 28, 2025)](https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/news/notices/change-health-insurance-requirement-makes-super-visa-more-accessible.html))
- At least $100,000 of emergency coverage per person. ([IRCC operational instructions: Super visa](https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/corporate/publications-manuals/operational-bulletins-manuals/temporary-residents/visitors/super-visa.html))
- Covers health care, hospitalization and repatriation. ([IRCC: Super visa forms and documents](https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/visit-canada/parent-grandparent-super-visa/forms-documents.html))
- Valid for at least one year from the date of entry, and for each entry to Canada. ([IRCC: Super visa forms and documents](https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/visit-canada/parent-grandparent-super-visa/forms-documents.html))
- Paid in full, or paid in instalments with a deposit. ([IRCC: Super visa forms and documents](https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/visit-canada/parent-grandparent-super-visa/forms-documents.html))
- Proof is the policy itself. IRCC doesn’t accept quotes, and border officers can ask to see the policy. ([IRCC: Super visa forms and documents](https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/visit-canada/parent-grandparent-super-visa/forms-documents.html))

## Questions people ask

### Does passing the checker mean the visa will be approved?

No. It only checks the insurance rules IRCC publishes. An officer decides each application on everything in it, including the host’s income, the invitation letter and the medical exam. The insurance must also still be valid each time your parent enters Canada.

### Can I use a quote instead of a policy?

No. IRCC says quotes aren’t accepted: the application needs proof of the policy itself, and border officers can ask to see it at each entry. Insurers usually issue a policy that starts on the planned arrival date, so it can be bought before the visa is approved; ask the broker about the insurer’s refund terms if the visa is refused.

### Is a foreign insurance policy accepted?

Since January 28, 2025, yes, but only from a foreign insurer that OSFI has authorized to sell accident and sickness insurance, that is on OSFI’s list of federally regulated financial institutions, and that issued the policy as part of its insurance business in Canada. The policy should say so. A broker or claims administrator is not an insurer: the policy must name the insurance company.
